The CDC's Arctic Investigations Program (through Chugachmiut Regional Native Association) awarded the Institute for Circumpolar Health Studies (ICHS) $5,000 for the Chugachmiut Infectious Disease Focus Group Training and Assistance project. Funding was amended with an additional $7,000, as well as $7,500 for a second year.

ICHS was responsible for conducting focus groups in the Chugachmiut communities to assess perceptions of how to deal with infectious diseases. ICHS worked with Chugachmiut staff to train them to conduct and assess the results of focus groups. The aim of the program was to help communities develop educational materials that would reduce the risk of disease transmission.
