In 1997 and 1998, at the request of the Council of Athabascan Tribal Governments (CATG), the Institute for Circumpolar Health Studies (ICHS) and Alaska Center for Rural Health, University of Alaska Anchorage, provided technical assistance and training support for a household survey performed by CATG. Upon survey completion, ICHS performed the data entry, analysis, and reporting of the completed surveys. The survey had five components:

1. Demographics,
2. Perceptions of respondents' health,
3. Perceptions of health needs in respondents' household,
4. Perceptions of health and social service needs of respondents' village, and
5. Perceptions of environmental health issues in respondents' village.

400 of the 493 disseminated surveys were returned, for an impressive response rate of 81.1%. The CATG's intention was to use the resulting information in planning health and social service programs for the CATG region.
